                     Introduction to Virtualization

Whether your business employs 10 or 500,000 people, Virtualization has a place in your environment to save you time, money, and reduce productivity costs.

Virtualization was developed in the 1960's by IBM to reduce amounts of data on their mainframe computers into logically partitioned virtual machines, allowing them to multitask their applications. As time moved on, virtualization dwindled as the cost for servers and desktops hit an all time low and server specific roles were given to each server growing the amount of servers per company to an unmanageable size, also called server sprawl.

Fact: Most servers only use 10-15% of their optimized utilization

As sever sprawl grew, so did energy costs, staff size and mild heart attacks! Administrators and IT Directors were faced with daunting tasks of basic administration, thinking of new ways to effectively backup data and keep it safe, having strong redundant disaster recovery plans and controlling the management costs that grew out of control associated with so many servers.

As industry grows, so does innovation, revisiting the past proved extremely profitable for a little company based out of California in 1998 that understood the need to re-introduce virtualized environments and start a new trend. VMware has continued it's growth and innovative ideas to every imaginable aspect of virtualization and is now the industry standard as a mature, proven business.

                                    Every good company needs competition!

Some of the best things about virtualization are:

  • There is no excuse for downtime, you can move a Virtual Machine from one  environment to another in seconds, while the end user only notices a slight delay. No more 6 hour rebuilds!

  • You save money while building many virtual machines that sit on one physical server reducing space and cooling costs as well as removing the need to manage an ever growing infrastructure.

  • Remote Management allows you to administer and build new virtual environments from your desk rather than the datacenter. reducing travel and helping shrink our carbon footprint.

  • Intel Motherboards have built-in Virtualization technology already so you just have to install and go!

Fact: Microsoft System Center can manage all your virtual environments at little cost.

Think Green!

We as a people owe it to our future generation to do our part in trying to preserve our planet and reduce unnecessary costs and actions. Virtualization is helping with reducing infrastructure, cooling and energy costs, minimizing the need for travel and preserving the planet.

Wait, There's More...

Virtualization doesn't stop at the Data Center, you can virtualize your desktops and applications as well. Many computer companies build Thin Clients (machine that depend on connecting to a server to perform all operating and application processes) The tremendous amount of administration is almost halted as every task is done at one location. You build the images, including your applications and deploy them  from a single source, thus reducing your overhead and maximizing your productivity.
