Computers with Intel vPro technology:
A managed computer device is accessible and
configurable. A computer with Intel vPro technology can be turned on
and off remotely by an administrator. It's boot
messages can be redirected to a console for remote monitoring and
configuration of the BIOS.
It can be forced to boot from an OS image on a remote computer.
This image can have diagnostic tools to test hard drives and memory.
Allowing IT to know if the PC needs a new OS image or if a hard
drives is defective and will require replacing.
A key feature of Intel vPro technology is the
ability to power the systems on and off remotely. In a large
corporate environment where hours are fixed, a global policy can be
defined where all PC's are automatically powered off after a
specific time. They can also be powered back on in the morning
just before the work day begins.
Other requirements of Intel vPro technology is the
hardware that is included. To qualify for the vPro brand a PC
must meet certain minimum hardware specifications. Most
importantly they must have an Intel Core 2 processor. Intel
Core 2 processors consume as much as half the power of previous
generations while delivering more performance saving power and
reducing operating costs.
Intel vPro technology computers have built in
firewalls so ports can be blocked at the NIC level. Rules can
be defined that will close down ports if certain activities like
repeated port scans are detected.
Core 2 Duo processors, a key component of Intel vPro
technology also include Intel Virtualization Technology, which along
with hypervisor software allows risky applications like web browsers
to be run in a virtual machine where they are segregated from other
resources.
